Excerpt
As he started to unlock the cab of his truck, he saw a young woman making her way toward him. For some reason, Ryan felt his heart starting to hammer in his chest. There was something about her that affected him. Maybe it was her delicate beauty, but he couldn't be sure.
"Hey, mister, do you think I can catch a ride with you?"
Ryan glanced at her long and hard noticing that she didn't look the part of any of the hookers that frequented the truck stops. She had long dark hair with small features and a petite figure to match. When she stopped within inches of him, he saw the most luminous violet eyes staring up at him that he'd ever seen on a person. She was a real beauty in every sense of the word. He again felt something tug at his heart just looking at her, but he shook the sensation aside knowing what would happen if he let his emotions overrule his head.
Hadn't he done that with Katie and look what it got him. A lot of heartache, pain and hardness in his heart when it came to trust in another person. He didn't want any strings attached in a relationship, but there was something about this young woman that he couldn't shake.
"My next stop is New Orleans," he told her. "I'm not sure where you want to go."
"New Orleans sounds good to me," she answered, giving him a look that almost melted Ryan's bones.
Stop it, Corbet; you're not going to be sucked in again by another female. "Okay, I was just heading out if you're ready?"
"I'm ready," she nodded waiting for Ryan to lift her to the top step of his rig.
When his hands cupped her waist, he saw how tiny she was not only in height, but she weighed next to nothing. Gently placing her on the seat in the cab, Ryan started to walk around the truck, but stopped.
"Where's your luggage?" he asked glancing up at her.
"I only have the one suitcase," she murmured.
Ryan looked around and grabbed the case lifting it into the sleeper compartment of the truck. He climbed in next to her and glanced sideways noticing how she huddled next to the door of the cab. Protectiveness swept through him, but again, he pushed the thought aside. He didn't need any more hang-ups and she looked like she'd be one.
"What's your name?" Ryan asked in a conversational tone.
"Jenny Jarvis," she answered in a husky whisper.
"All right, Jenny Jarvis, I'm Ryan Corbet and if you're ready, we'll head out."
